Diwali or Deepavali is a festival of lights and is a major celebration on the calendar of people from the Indian subcontinent. The festival is usually celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika (between mid-October and mid-November). Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance". In Tasmania, the annual Diwali festival is held in Franklin Square presented by Deepavali Tasmania Inc.   From 2024 the event will be celebrated in Pricess Wharf 1.

Diwali is an annual celebration of Southeast Asian communities.  It is a unique festival that displays the beauty of Tasmanian multiculturalism through music, dance, singing and performing arts.
Diwali Tasmania is now on the lookout for amazing volunteers!You can contribute in a variety of ways...there is no limit!!
We are seeking volunteers to assist in a variety of activities such as: community engagement, decoration workshops, coordination of cultural programs, food and community stalls, management for social media and media
There will also be opportunities for volunteers to attend workshops in organisational values and personality development.

Discover Deepavali Tasmania

The Deepavali Tasmania Incorporated is formed and developed by members of diverse Indo-ethnic cultural community groups, who come together on a common platform.  It draws strength from these grassroots organizations in celebrating Diwali and sharing the underlying values, traditions, and philosophies. These activities promote a closer social network and thereby build social cohesion through the atmosphere of festivity - a tradition the Association aims to rediscover in a new socio-cultural environment.

Deepavali Tasmania Board of Management

Deepavali Tasmania Board of Management (or DT Board) is responsible for the Management of all events and activities of Deepavali Tasmania Inc. The DT Board is responsible for the management and reporting of the activities to various regulatory bodies. Apart from the annual Diwali event, DT Board also coordinates various activities such as “Satsang Group Discussions”, “Diwali Talk Shows”, and “Personal and Organisational Development Workshops” for the supporting community groups and volunteers. . DT has a big board with long-term members of 10-year term, and co-opted members of 1 to 3 years term. DT Board also ensures close coordination participation of all the supporting community groups.

Diwali Committee of Management

The Diwali Event is managed by the Deepavali Event Management Committee (Diwali Committee).  Each year Diwali Committee will be selected and authorized by the Deepavali Tasmania Board of Management.  The 2024 Diwali Committee includes all three age groups: young adults, middle-aged adults, and seniors.  They are also from multiple cultural backgrounds.  It creates a marvelous opportunity for festivities and cultural variations suiting all ages and cultures at the heart of the capital city of Tasmania. Diwali is not a simple Event but is the outcome of the year-long activities and interactions of multicultural communities based on the values and vision of the organization.
